CHASING DAYLIGHT

I read Erwin McManus' latest book, CHASING DAYLIGHT, during the holidays. This book came on my radar screen when I saw it listed as a favorite book in the profile of a person whose walk with God I highly respect. I was not disappointed. This book proved a good read. Thought provoking, too.

Of all of the areas McManus explored, two things jumped out. Probably it's because of where I find myself in my relationship with my True Father and what I believe He is requesting of me. The first is found in the section "INITIATIVE:"

There is a direct relationship between passion and initiative. The more passionate you are, the more proactive you will tend to be (even if you boldly do the wrong thing). Here's where the dilemma lies: this can actually be paralyzing for a sincere follower of Jesus Christ. You don't want to passionately do the wrong thing. You desperately want to do what's on God's heart, not just on your heart. Here's the liberating reality: when you are passionate about God, you can trust your passions. God uses our passions as a compass to guide us. To put it crassly, when you are madly in love with God, you can do whatever you want. I am convinced this may be the best contemporary translation of Psalm 37:4. [page 50, emphasis mine]

Psalm 37:4 says: Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart. (NAS)

I love McManus' modern translation. Isn't that powerful?

He develops another idea in the section of his book called "IMPACT." Here is his launching point for those ideas:

We read in 2 Chronicles 16:9: "For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him." [page 190]

Although I've read the story he unfolds with this verse several times before, it all really stoped me in my tracks....caused me to pause and think. And it provoked several things:
  • Father, is my heart fully committed to You?
  • I desire for my heart to be fully committed to You.
  • Please show me where my heart is not fully committed to You.
Clearly, I do desire to be strengthened by the Lord. Of that, I am sure.
